Tech discounts at fair
Food Safari Home Electronics Fair
» Where: Suntec City Convention and Exhibition Centre
» Date: Nov 14 to 16
» Time: 11am to 10pm daily
» Admission: Free

NEVER mind if the technology is past season's hot stuff, it is the deep discounts that matter, especially in these belt-tightening times.

Those scouting around for electronic gadgets will have one more IT fair - you can never have too many sales - to look forward to.

At the Food Safari Home Electronics Fair, expect gizmos from TVs to cameras to GPS systems and even home appliances - from big names such as Sharp, Samsung, Toshiba and LG - to be offered at discounts of up to 90 per cent.

The Sharp G Series 46-inch full HD TV will go on sale at $1,999 (almost half its original price of $3,999), while the Toshiba 42A3500E 42-inch HD-ready TV will go for $999 (usual price $2,599).

Also check out Sony's new Bravia Z4500 full HD TV sets that promise high-resolution glory - great when you are watching fast-action shows like football matches.

With a frame refresh rate of 200Hz, these Sony TVs, the fastest from Sony here, uses Motionflow technology to ramp up the number of frames that make up an image. This means squeezing more frames into a specific duration.

Just so you know what you are buying, the refresh rate is very important for crisp, brilliant images.

It refers to the speed at which the TV displays the individual frames - made up of millions of pixels - that form the image we see on screen.

Each image screened on an LCD TV is a succession of hundreds of thousands of frames being flashed one after another to make up that image.

When the TV refreshes these frames quickly, viewers are less likely to see the pixels changing, resulting in clearer and smoother images. So you will pick up the finer details of even, say, the blades of grass and the splatter of mud during a football tackle.

The fair will be held at the Suntec City Convention and Exhibition Centre from Nov 14 to 16.

Organiser Sphere Exhibits, a subsidiary of Singapore Press Holdings, has teamed up with electronics retailer Audio House to stage the food-meets-tech event.

'Food and electronics fairs have typically been the favourites of the Singapore events and roadshow scene,' says Chua Wee Phong, executive director of Sphere Exhibits, which specialises in event production. 'We want to create a mega fiesta that is great for both bargain-hunting of home electronics and trying food from different cultures.'
