Creating great cards with iPhoto

The holidays are around the corner and if you're planning to send some Christmas or New Year cards, why not make some personalized ones to show that you care?

For Mac users, Apple's iPhoto offers you the ability to create professional looking cards straight from your desktop. Here's our klutz-proof guide:

In the Library menu, choose the Event or group of photos that you want to make a card with.

Select the photo that you want and click on the "Card" icon located at the bottom centre of the page.

A window will pop up, showing you a preview of available card designs and a list of designs sorted by category. Since it's a holiday greeting card that we're going to make, we've selected the "Holiday/Events" category. But do explore the other designs, you'll never know if something might suit your pictures better.

Once you've decided on the design you want, click "Choose".

You'll be brought to the next screen, where you can further customise your card. Click on the card's default text to add your own season's greetings or a special message.

There are also three edit function buttons located at the bottom of the screen offering you more options to tweak the design and truly make the card your own.

The "Themes" button opens the theme selection window, in which you an choose another design to replace the current one you've chosen for your card.
The "Background" button shows the different backgrounds designs and alternative colours available for the current theme you've selected. Play around with different colors to find one that suits your photos best.
The "Design" button will bring up a list of available layouts for the current selected theme. If you want to include more than one photo in your card, try changing the card's layout.

You can also switch between a horizontally or vertically oriented card by tweaking the "Orientation" dropdown list.

If you've selected a picture in your card, the "Adjust" button becomes active, and you can work on colour correction, edit your photo, or add a filter effect.

The "Settings" button brings up a window allowing you to change the font, text size and other attributes of your card.

Once you're satisfied with your work, click "Buy Card" to have it printed by a professional printer in the US and shipped to you. Prices start from $2.80 per card.

Can't get printed cards in time for Christmas? Don't fret! If you have a printer and some good photo paper with you, simply click on File>Print and a window will pop up allowing you to print your card on your own printer.

Now there aren't any more reasons why you should sent store-bought cards to your friends for Christmas.
