Make Dad a customized CD

Gifts don't need to come with a high price tag to be precious. Find out the special songs that remind your dad of memorable times in his life, perhaps some numbers by Elvis or the Beatles.

Make a CD of his all-time favourite tunes with the help of your Windows PC. The Windows Media Player (WMP) program makes this really easy.

If you haven't already, download this on your PC today* - or if you have Windows Vista, WMP 11 is already available on your PC.

Here's how to knock out your masterpiece music compilations:

1. Launch WMP, then choose the Burn tab at the top of the screen to access WMP's built-in CD burning engine.

2. Building a burn list in WMP is very easy to do - just use the drag and drop interface. Simply click on single songs or entire albums from your music library and drag them across to the burn list area on the right-hand side of the screen.

3. If you create a burn list that requires more than one blank CD then you will see the words 'Next Disc' indicating that multiple blank CDs are needed.

4. Finally, to begin the process of burning an audio CD, click on the Start Burn icon.

5. Once you have started the burn process, the screen will display a list of tracks to be written to the CD with the status of each. Each file will either have pending, writing to disc, or complete alongside it. A green progress bar is displayed next to the track that is currently being written to CD, giving you the progress as a percentage.

6. Finally, don't forget to check that that all the tracks on your audio CD have been written correctly before you carefully wrap up your lovingly made gift for dad straight from the heart!

(*Windows Media Player comes pre-installed with some versions of Windows PCs. To get the latest version, currently Windows Media Player 11, download it from http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/11/default.aspx).
