Google Maps is a great tool to find your way around - not only in Singapore but also for when you are on holiday.
However, the useful tool lacks certain location details, such as bus stops, overhead bridges and even buildings, and these can be very helpful if you want to pass along a map to friends, say, for a housewarming party.
What you need is a personal map with additional information created by you.
First, go to maps.google.com and click on My Maps. Key in your Gmail account details as this makes it easier to link applications.
Hit Create A New Map and you will come to a page called Title and Description, which you can use to describe the nature of your map.
Type in your home address and the map should display the location.
The first thing you should do is identify your home. On the top left-hand corner of the map, there should be three icons - a balloon, a hand and a crooked line.
The first lets you place markers on the map. The hand allows you to move the markers while the crooked line lets you draw icons or directions to your home.
Put a balloon placemark over your home and name it in the window that appears.
You can replace the balloon with a selection of pre-rendered icons such as a bus stop. In the same pop-up window, name the bus-stop and add in details such as the buses that stop there.
You can use the crooked line icon to draw shapes of, say, a large tree so that your friends can get their bearings more easily.
You can even insert pictures into the pop-up window so buildings are more recognisable.
When all this is done, save the map and send it to your friends using the Send button located at the top right corner of the map.
If anyone turns up late, they can no longer say they could not find their way.
