NLB on why Xiaxue is on bloggers' list

SHE'S popular.

That's part of the reason why the National Library Board (NLB) has included Ms Wendy Cheng's - better known as Xiaxue in the online world - blog in its electronic archives.

Mr Raju Buddharaju, 58, the NLB's director of digital resources and services, explained that one of the criteria for archival is that the selected blogs have to belong to "a representative sample that would reflect a snapshot of society".

SUGGESTED BLOGGER: Mr Benjamin Lee of popular current affairs and humour site miyagi.sg.

He added that only blogs about Singapore or of interest to Singaporeans would be considered.

They could be produced by individuals who are experts in their fields, well-known personalities, national leaders or celebrities, have won awards, or are owned by organisations and societies. Mr Raju said: "Content from blogs offer views that would otherwise not be available from mainstream media, which are already archived.

"Blogs, together with websites and other online publications, therefore are an invaluable source of documented heritage for Singapore's present and future generations..."

Other blogs which have been selected for archival include Talkingcock.com by Mr Colin Goh and Air-Conditioned Nation by media academic Cherian George.

The entire blog would be archived, with the NLB taking digital snapshots of the site at least once a year.

The NLB's initiative has been welcomed by bloggers.

The Online Citizen's Choo Zheng Xi: "It's a recognition that the Internet is part of our cultural heritage. Today's popular culture is tomorrow's history. It is good that the NLB has recognised that."

SELECTED BLOGGER: Mr Colin Goh of Talkingcock.com is in the initial list of 11 bloggers chosen.

Blogger Eugene Chong, a 21-year-old undergraduate, agreed: "People will still be able to read the blogs even after they are removed or deleted. "Maybe they can even be published into a book one day."

But financial consultant Lim Tau Wee, 27, cautioned that the library will have to be very selective as there are too many blogs.

He explained: "They should be clear about their criteria, for what purpose they are doing it and for what kind of future reference the archives will be."

However, lawyer Xu Si Han, 27, were indifferent to the preservation of such blogs.

Said the 27-year-old, who also contributes regularly to Singapore Angle - a current affairs blog that has also been chosen for archival: "Given the low cost of electronic storage, it is a moot point whether NLB archives anything on the net or not.

"There are various Internet services available that archive the entire web, and I am pretty sure that Google themselves do it, given their massive server farms all over the world."

Other sites suggested by bloggers include Mrmiyagi.sg, Stevenlim.net and Blinkymummy.blogspot.com.
