PETALING JAYA, MALAYSIA - FAMILY members of prisoners can now meet their loved ones in jail via video-conferencing.

The Prisons Department said in a statement on Thursday that a Televisit system had been introduced to enable such 'meetings'.

If a prisoner being held at Kajang Prison wishes to communicate with his family living in Penang, they can do so via video-conferencing if they register for the system at Kajang Prison, said the statement.

The free service is available at the Kajang, Taiping, Simpang Renggam and Penang prisons.

The department hopes the system will improve family ties and 'reduce stress faced by prisoners'. -- The Star/ANN
