HAVE the entire street directory in your pocket, wherever you go.
Singapore Land Authority (SLA) has made available a detailed guide to Singapore's streets which can be used on smart phones and PDAs (personal digital assistants).
The application, called SLA StreetMap Mobile, is a collaboration with MapKing (Singapore), a subsidiary of Hong Kong-based navigation software developer MapKing International.
With this, the public no longer has to lug around a cumbersome hard copy of the street directory.
All you are required to do is to download the application from http://sla.mapking.com for free on any mobile device that runs on Windows Operating Systems.
It contains 2,000 buildings, 4,200 named roads and about 120,000 named address points, making it the most updated and comprehensive street directory available.
Basic functions include being able to add locations to a list of favourites and the ability to specify a home location.
Unfortunately, the application does not support any global positioning system (GPS) navigation function.
Also, the free version only allows the search of road names, address points and postal codes.
When asked why the application does not have GPS capabilities, a spokesman for SLA said that they will "remain the mapping authority in Singapore but leave the market forces to work on the applications".
The public can purchase the fully navigable GPS package from MapKing (Singapore) at http://www.eastgear.com.
It is also for sale at outlets such as Challenger for a one-time payment of $99.
Mr Simon Goh, director of MapKing Singapore, said: "The full package includes points of interests such as ATMs and petrol kiosks."
