THE report, "IT-savvy 61-year-old was once a 'dinosaur'" (my paper, Oct 8) is testimony that our senior citizens know that retirement does not mean retirement from life, but the freedom to engage in what they enjoy, away from the constraints of work and its responsibilities.
I have attended computer classes at the Retired and Senior Programme (RSVP) where most of the trainers, who are in their 60s and 70s, can put the younger generation to shame.
The enthusiasm that these spirited seniors displayed when teaching their peers proves that older people can lead meaningful and fruitful lives.
Most of the elderly students use e-mail as a platform to communicate with each other as some find it difficult to move around.
Hence, the computer is a great help to them, and cuts down the problems caused by mobility issues.
It is imperative that our senior citizens keep active, or their mental faculties will deteriorate faster.
More significantly, we must correct the image of the elderly as being frail and helpless.
