Singapore youth big on online communication

SINGAPORE youth are a voracious lot when it comes to online communication.

Blogging? Three in five said they had blogged, or read another blogger's post in the past month.

What about Facebook and Friendster? More than one in two had profiles or checked someone else's profile on the social- networking sites.

They are among the region's top bloggers, social networkers and gamers, according to a Synovate survey of over 13,000 people aged eight to 24 years old.

Released yesterday, the survey polled 940 Singaporeans on their media-consumption habits.

It turned out that youngsters here are capable of multi-tasking while online, like engaging in instant messaging and listening to music at the same time.

In fact, they spend the most time on the Internet and television - nine hours every day, compared to the regional average of 6.8 hours.

Singaporeans also lead the pack when it comes to online gaming. One in two preferred to play with others while 57 per cent say they do so on their own.

Polytechnic graduate Willis Ang, 24, is typical of his generation.

He told my paper: "I spend up to seven hours playing online games every day, much to my mum's dismay.

"It's normal for me to chat online and watch videos because it can get rather boring waiting for my friends to respond."

Microsoft Advertising's trade marketing manager for South-east Asia, Mr Geert Desager, 37, said: "It's strange that firms here spend only 2 per cent of their ad budget on advertising online when Singapore is one of the most connected and educated places in the world."
