SLIGHTLY bigger than a toaster, this monochrome printer is one of the smallest, if not the tiniest black and white digital LED printers to-date.

Digital LED is a new technology that offers faster prints speeds than laser printing. Laser technology is an indirect seven-step process using a laser beam to create a single dot. In contrast, digital LED uses many small light-producing semi-conductors that produce a row of dots at one time.

The pint-sized Oki B2200N weighs just 5kg and is light enough to carry with one hand.

Plus, it's fast - 20 pages per minutes - on par with other full-sized monochrome laser printers out there.

This printer has a 266MHz processor and up to 16MB RAM. It also has a USB port and an Ethernet port for print sharing. It's designed like a typical inkjet printer as are its inadequacies. Laser printers usually have a 250-sheet input tray but this one has only 150 sheets.

My experiences with the printer proved mixed. While it was easy to set up and use, there were irritating paper jams.

Once, 18 sheets of paper got stuck in between the rollers, creating a massive jam. I can understand two sheets of paper getting stuck but surely there should be a mechanism to prevent more than 10 sheets being pushed through at once.

Fortunately, clearing paper jams - including that 18-sheet pile-up - was easy. Just take the cartridge out and yank out the offending sheets.

Text on printed documents is legible and sharp around the edges. Ink spread, however, is not as good as laser print - you see white dots on the surface of large black fonts.

Picture print quality is average.

Even at the highest print setting of 1,200 x 600dpi you can see lines running across images.

FINAL SAY

This mini printer has its fair share of highs and lows.
