Nikon D300 DSLR camera
Nikon D300
» $2,999

THIS is not only the most expensive camera in the round up but it is also the best all-round performer. It has intelligently laid-out dials and buttons and handles comfortably. Its easy-to-tweak custom setting sets it apart from its competitors.

For someone who rarely uses a Nikon, I didn't find it hard to learn how this camera works or how to make full use of its powerful features. Oh, I also love the fonts on the menus.

New camera features include a 12.3-megapixel CMOS sensor, 51 auto focus points with 15 cross-type sensors.

Good-to-have features include a HDMI output slot allowing you to view shots instantly on a HDTV.

Like the 40D, the D300 also features Live View. But unlike the 40D, it takes several more steps to activate the D300's Live View. Like Canon, Nikon invested in a lens-based image stabiliser technology.

Delivers good picture quality - with a lower noise profile compared to the Alpha 700 and the E3 - and images with good all round exposures, accurate colours and wide tones.
