AS AT the middle of this year, security firm Trend Micro estimated that there were over 50 million malicious software circulating in cyberspace, ready to inflict chaos in more ways than one.
That is why its Internet Security Pro package takes on the role of a multi-tasking security guard.
The software builds a fence around your computer keeping the bad guys from coming in, employs a guard dog that can sniff out potential threats and has a nanny that prevents sensitive data from going out.
You will need about 500MB of space and just 15 minutes to install, register and activate the software.
Setting up the security parameters can be intimidating for first timers due to the sheer number of features and decisions you need to make, like what the program should do when it encounters a threat.
Fortunately, there are brief instructions at the start of each feature so at least you can keep track of what you are doing.
The suite of protection tools like anti-virus, anti-spyware provides the first layer of defence.
When fully activated, the feature checks for viruses or spyware when you open, save or download files.
It also prevents viruses or spyware from making unauthorised changes to your operating system files or important programs.
Another feature is the Personal Firewall. It monitors data your computer receives and transmits and prevents intruders from stealing your information.
The third layer looks at threats from websites and e-mail. The Internet and E-mail Control tool checks if the website you are visiting, an e-mail you are about to read or an attachment you are about to open contains a malware.
Another plus is the Network Map, which monitors who is lurking near your home network. It sniffs out moochers - freeloaders trying to surf wirelessly using your wireless Internet bandwidth - and chases them away by blocking access to your network.
For parents who want to protect their kids from Internet threats, the Parental Control feature is a godsend. With it, you can block access to websites not only by specifying the URL address but also by keywords such as hate, adult or gambling. So such sites are always out of bounds even if they change their address.
There are bonuses. Remote File, for instance, locks up sensitive work - the way you would lock a vault - with a password.
Should you lose your notebook, simply make an online report. Remote File Lock automatically seals the vault, blocking access to everything inside, even if someone has the correct password.
Final say
A comprehensive security software that gives peace of mind on top of robust protection.
