Singapore has opened its doors to a wireless technology called ultra-wideband (UWB) that will let people hook up electronics equipment like cameras, TV sets and speakers without any messy cables.

The Infocomm Development Authority (IDA) said on Monday that such wireless products based on international standards will be allowed here without licensing, making them more easily available and cheaper in the future.

Like Bluetooth, UWB is a short-range wireless technology that allows users to hook up several devices.

However, UWB is also able to send video wirelessly over the air, because of its faster speeds.

This means a camera equipped with UWB ? likely to be available in four to five years ? can send videos wirelessly to a similarly-equipped TV set.

In the same way, people can send Powerpoint slides to a projector without connecting up messy cables.

IDA said Singapore will follow standards such as those set by Europe?s Electronic Communications Comittee. Any device that is made for Europe can be sold here without an additional licence, making it cheaper to import them
