SINGAPORE Telecommunications gained a record 13.8 million mobile-phone subscribers during its fourth quarter, led by customer gains in India.

SingTel had a total of 185.3 million mobile-phone users in eight markets at the end of March, it said in a statement to the Singapore stock exchange on Tuesday.

Bharti Airtel Ltd, India's biggest wireless operator and 31 percent owned by SingTel, added 6.8 million wireless customers during the quarter, two million more than second-ranked Reliance Communications Ltd.

Indonesia's PT Telekomunikasi Selular, or Telkomsel, gained 3.45 million customers during the quarter and Sydney-based SingTel Optus Pty attracted 135,000 users.

SingTel owns all of Optus and 35 per cent in Telkomsel, Indonesia's biggest wireless carrier.

In Singapore, where mobile-phone subscriptions exceed the population, SingTel added 244,000 customers, raising the total to 2.57 million.

SingTel is scheduled to report fiscal fourth-quarter earnings before the Singapore market opens on Wednesday.
