If you need to keep an eye on Fido while you're at the office, internet cameras like the D-Link DCS-920 wireless internet camera should be on your shopping list.
Wireless cameras like the DCS-920 have an added advantage over their wired counterparts because you can choose to place them anywhere in the house, while wired models would have to be placed near a phone line or modem.
The DCS-920 scores on it's easy set up. Installation of both the hardware and software were both relatively painless and we had the camera up and running fairly quickly.
Data transition is also fairly smooth most of the time, though the camera resolution was a tad on the low side.
Images were captured clearly in good lighting conditions, but tend to get very grainy in low light, so much so that it's sometimes hard to see what is going on.
We've found the camera to be reliable even when it's placed some distance from the router, though we've experienced some hitches in performance.
Our biggest gripe about the DCS-920 is that the camera seems to drop off the network more often than we'd like it to; and on certain occasions there was a need to turn everything on and off again to reconnect.
The DCS-920 also doesn't come with any sound recording features, so you'll be looking at a silent video image. But the software provided does allow you to record the images captured onto your computer.
The Verdict
If you need a wireless internet camera for home or casual use, the DCS-920 would be quite well suited to your needs and healthy for the wallet.
